From 1717 through 1836 the governments of Spain and Mexico in San Antonio de Bexar collected an amazing series of official documents detailing the military, civilian, and political life of the Spanish province of Texas and the Mexican state of Coahuila y Texas. The collection includes over 200,000 documents original Spanish documents and a collection of English translations created during 1934-1980, for documents from 1699 to 1812, chronicling Spanish efforts to maintain their empire in North America while preventing incursions from French, British, and U.S. settlers and from American Indian nations; the growing revolutionary movement in Mexico, beginning around 1810 and culminating in independence from Spain in 1821; the tentative hold of Mexico on its new empire while fighting American Indians and U.S. settlers, including the Comanche Wars and Fredonian Rebellion; and the final break of Texas from Mexico during the Texas Revolution of 1835-1836. The original documents are housed at the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin.
