Celebrate the Art of Poetry!

Poetry is an amazing art form that utilizes spoken language to create beautiful ideas and allows us to express ourselves uniquely. HPL celebrates the world of poetry and its greatest poets throughout April for National Poetry Month.  

Poetry & Pose: Yoga paired with readings

Experience the soothing sound of poetry read aloud as your weekly yoga asana class, led by Dr. Inge Ford, gets underway. On the last Thursday of each month, be inspired to create your own poetry with thoughtful instruction by a WITS teacher and from the comfort of your mat, immediately following yoga from 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM!

*Special summer readings: join Houston’s former Poet Laureate Robin Davidson for pre-release readings from her poetry anthology on Thursday, June 22 and Thursday, July 20 at 6:30 PM immediately following yoga. For more information on the project visit

Poet Laureate

Announcing our new City of Houston Poet Laureate: Deborah "DEEP" Mouton! The role of the Houston Poet Laureate is to stimulate poetic impulse, foster appreciation of poetry in all its forms, and serve Houston residents and visitors with expressions of culture through words.

Youth Poet Laureate

The Youth Poet Laureate program is an initiative led by the Writers in the Schools with coordination from the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs and the Houston Public Library.  Ashley Turner, First Daughter of Houston, announced the appointment of Fareena Arefeen at the Writers in the Schools’ gala on November 10, 2016. 

Public Poetry

Poetry comes alive the first Saturday of each month at 2 PM through a partnership with Public Poetry.  Audience members are encouraged to read a piece by their favorite poet, then stop by a local eatery for “After-Words” to mix and mingle with poets, friends and others.
