Wanting to broaden your horizons by finishing high school and receiving job training? The Houston Publc Library now offers adults the opportunity to earn accredited high school diplomas and career certificates through Career Online High School.

Achieve your dream of a better job and life by applying today. There are a limited number of scholarships to qualified adults who are looking to advance their careers, prepare for workforce entry, or continue their education.

After you successfully complete an online self-assessment and a two-week prerequisite course, followed by an in-person interview, your application will be reviewed for award of a scholarship to attend Career Online High School.

If you are selected for a scholarship and enrolled in the program, you will be paired with an academic coach. Your coach provides ongoing guidance, evaluates performance, and connects you to the resources you need to master the courses. Students have up to 18 months to complete the program.

What is Career Online High School?

Career Online High School is an online high school diploma and career certification program available through the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County.

Am I eligible to apply to this online high school program?

You are eligible to apply if you meet the following requirements:

  • You are a resident within the City of Houston limits and 21-years-old or older.
  • You have completed eighth grade and wish to earn your high school diploma.

Adults between the ages 18 and 21 and minors should pursue their high school education through existing high school programs.

Will I receive my GED?

No. This is not a GED program. Successful graduates will earn a high school diploma and a career certification through an accredited high school.

What is the difference between a GED and a high school diploma?

While both the GED and the high school diploma are important, there are several differences between them. Among the most significant is the fact that some colleges, institutions and organizations require a high school diploma and may not accept the GED. In addition to receiving a high school diploma, you also earn a career certificate and complete additional job preparation documents and training.

What type of career certification can I pursue?

You may earn a certificate in the following areas:

  • Childcare and Education
  • Certified Protection Officer (Security Officer)
  • Office Management
  • Certified Transportation Services (Trucker/Commercial Driver)
  • Homeland Security
  • General Career Preparation
  • Retail Customer Service Skills
  • Food Service and Customer Service Skills

Is all coursework web-based?

Yes. Computers are available at all of the Library locations and can be reserved online.

Is all coursework in English?

Yes. At this time, all coursework is available in English only.

How long will it take to complete the program?

You will be given up to 18 months to complete the program, which consists of 18 credits. You may transfer up to 14 credits from your former high school. Depending on how many credits you transfer, the program can be completed in as few as five months.

What is the history of Career Online High School?

Career Online High School began in 2011 and was accredited in February 2012. Since February 2012, 819 students have enrolled in the program with a retention rate of 73%.

Is Career Online High School accredited?

Career Online High School is accredited as an online school district by the AdvancED Accreditation Commission, the national commission that confers the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI) accreditation seal. Are the Career Online High School staff credentialed?

Yes, all instructors are state-certified.

When is its staff available to assist students?

Most of the academic coaches and academic support instructors are located in Florida. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Time; however, coaches have evening hours twice a week (hours will likely be expanded). An academic coach will welcome the student initially and then reach out to all students at least once every two weeks – and more frequently for students needing additional assistance.

How do I get started?

Complete an online self-assessment and a two-week prerequisite course. After you have successfully finished the self-assessment and the prerequisite course, you will be invited to an in-person interview. After the interview, your application will be reviewed for a scholarship award to attend Career Online High School.
