We've made some changes to our Library Events page that we hope will make it easier for you to find events happening all over the system. Here's what's new:
Up until now, the only way to search for events was to use the "Search Our Website" box, but this wasn't always useful. In addition to events, the search results showed other information that, while possibly related, often overshadowed the events. Now we have added a search box to the Library Events page that only searches events. You can search for the title of an event (if you know it), Event Type, Library Name, or keywords. We've added the option for our staff to add tags to events, so, for example, if a library is holding a craft program that is related to spring, they can add keywords like "spring," "flowers," etc. that are more specific to that one event. You can use these types of keywords to search for programs specifically on a topic you're interested in (this feature will get better and better as our staff start adding keywords).
While you can search for things like Event Type and Library name, sometimes the amount of information you get back is overwhelming. We've improved our filters now to help you narrow down your results. You can enter a search term in the search box, then choose options from the different filters. For example, if you want to take a Microsoft Word class at Central Library, you can type "Word" (without quotes) in the search box, then click Libraries and check the box next to Central. When you click Search, it will only show you the classes at Central Library. You can choose multiple locations, too, if there are several libraries convenient to you.
You don't have to use the search box, either. If you want, you can just use the filters. For example, you can check a few libraries plus a few types of events to get a variety of different events, or, if you just want events for kids, you can choose a library or libraries and the appropriate age groups. Take a look and play around with the filters to see what you can find.
More Featured Events
When we first launched our new website in 2014, we included spots to promote 3 featured events. The rest of the page was devoted to all the upcoming events across HPL. Since we have so many locations and so much going on, this wasn't as useful as we had hoped. Now we have the option to choose up to 12 featured events and removed the other upcoming events from this page. You can still see the upcoming events by clicking on the Calendar View or by visiting the location page for any library you choose.
Now when you visit a location page, you will see all upcoming events for that library (previously it showed only the next 6 events). You can page through these events by clicking the page numbers at the bottom of the page, or you can see them all in one page by clicking the "All Events for the Location" button. Additionally, if you click "Full Event Calendar" you will see a calendar view where you can select the library of your choice to see the calendar for that location.
We hope you find these changes helpful! Please leave feedback for us in the comments!
