There's always something amazing to do in Houston, and holidays are obviously no exception.  While all Houston Public Library locations will be closed Sunday and Monday in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, there will be plenty of activities for you and yours to enjoy on this important day.  Be sure and check out at least one of these awesome events!

Take a day on, not a day off!  If you'd like to give back on this Day of Service, there are many local projects who will be looking for volunteers.  To find opportunities near you, click the link above and enter your zip code.  Easy Peasy.

The Children's Museum of Houston will be hosting a peace march led by the Kid's Committee.  Also enjoy the Spirit of Sankofa Chorale and a rendition of Dr. King's "I Have a Dream Speech" as well as other inspirational readings.

The MLK Parade Foundation will be hosting events all weekend, starting with the 11th Annual MLK Youth Parade on Saturday, January 14th.  On Sunday, the 16th Annual MLK Battle of the Bands Competition is sure to be amazing, and then on Monday you can enjoy (live or on TV) the third largest parade in the country: the 23rd Annual MLK Grande Parade!

The Black Heritage Society is hosting their 39th Annual MLK, Jr. Parade and Celebration, with events all through the weekend starting on Friday, January 13th with an opening mixer & reception.

If you're staying in this weekend, don't worry!  HPL still has thousands of resources at your fingertips 24/7.  Check out our E-books & More section to learn all about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and why his legacy is and will always be cause for celebration.

Stay peaceful, Houston!
