Each year the American Library Association (ALA) presents the Stonewall Book Awards and honors to literature, non-fiction, and children’s and YA work exhibiting “exceptional merit relating to the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender experience.” The awards will be presented to the authors at ALA’s annual conference this month.
Throughout the month of June many cities in the United States celebrate LGBT Pride Month with parades, festivals, and other events. “The month of June was chosen for LGBT Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which occurred at the end of June 1969. As a result, many pride events are held during this month to recognize the impact LGBT people have had in the world.”
Many of the titles presented with a Stonewall Book Award or honor in 2015 are available for check out through the Houston Public Library.
