The Central Library Plaza’s renovation is designed to create a family friendly atmosphere for the Houston community to gather for leisure, lite dining, library and city activities and programs. This project includes placement of a new steel/glass stage area including lighting dedicated for concerts, plays, programs and other events. New granite pavers will cover most existing concrete along the Julia Ideson Building (JIB) side of the plaza area. All the existing wood deck areas will be removed in order to install granite pavers and new lighting around the trees. This renovation project is expected to be completed by late Winter 2017.

After being closed for extensive renovations for over a year, the David M. Henington-Alief Regional Library will host its grand re-opening in September 2016. The $400K renovation included updates to the Children’s Area, a new Teen Area, latest digital resources and new lounge furniture. The Adult space received an update with a laptop bar and upgrades to the Passport Office.


Jungman Neighborhood Library

Funding: Library Bonds

The 2-year renovation project has been completed at the J. Frank Jungman Neighborhood Library. The exterior of this 40-year old building has gone through major renovation which included the installation of new window walls, a new roof system and an extended parking lot with landscaping and irrigation. There was also an upgrade to the electrical system to sustain an increase in digital equipment. The new interior includes a cozy Children’s Reading Room, and a Teen Room with gaming space. Additionally, the interior includes an Adult Reading Room, a quiet room and a new small-scale Business Center.


Young Neighborhood Library

The Houston Public Library will unveil a brand new Alice McKean Young Neighborhood Library that will provide the community with increased space and resources. The building design and system will achieve the LEED™ Silver Certification for maximizing durability and efficiency. The library at its new location (at the northwest corner of Griggs Road and Martin Luther King, Jr.) will be highly visible from the light rail Southeast Line, as well as pedestrian and car traffic. The exterior will have a striking unique design with ceiling to floor window walls, pleasing landscape art and an extended parking lot. The interior will include Children’s, Teen and Adult spaces equipped with comfy lounge chairs, study tables, computers and gaming capabilities. The library will provide state-of-the art technology with laptop bars and several conference rooms for community meetings and activities.


Stimley-Blue Ridge Neighborhood Library

The Stimley-Blue Ridge Neighborhood Library renovation project included re-organization of space to accommodate a new Texas WIC Center adjacent to the library.  It has also been designated as a Texas State Libraries & Archives Commission's Family Place Libraries™.This project is a collaboration with the Houston Public Library and City of Houston Health Department. The renovation will provide a multitude of resources to its community.


Robinson-Westhchase Neighborhood Library

The Robinson-Westchase Neighborhood Library is currently under construction to be completely renovated. Upon reopening, the community will experience a welcoming, modern and family friendly space. The renovation will include an exquisite window wall and front area, new roofing system, and an enhanced electrical system to facilitate an increase in computer services. There will be upgraded spaces for Adult reading and quiet areas as well as Children and Teen spaces with lounge-style furniture and a new meeting space. The roof deck, parking lot, landscaping, irrigation and site elements will be repaired or replaced as required.
